2022 ACC expert consensus pathway on cardiovascular sequelae of COVID-19
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology has published an expert consensus decision pathway on CV consequences of COVID-19.
The document provides recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of adults with myocarditis following COVID-19 infection or COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. In addition, guidance is given for evaluation and management of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), more commonly known as long COVID. The authors of the expert consensus decision pathway proposed two new terms to distinguish different CV-related health problems following COVID-19 infection:
- PASC-CVD, or PASC-Cardiovascular Disease, refers to a broad group of CV conditions (including myocarditis) that manifest at least four weeks after COVID-19 infection.
- PASC-CVS, or PASC-Cardiovascular Syndrome, includes a wide range of CV symptoms without objective evidence of cardiovascular disease following standard diagnostic testing.
The document also provides guidance for safe resumption of sports for competitive and non-competitive athletes.
